On December 13, the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education, Lena Kolarska-Bobińska, nominated members of the State Ethics Committee for Animal Experimentation for the next, four year cadency. Among others, Prof Krzysztof Turlejski and Dr Anna Passini were nominated. K. Turlejski was later elected as the head of the Committee.

On October 16-18th, 2013, the Nencki Institute hosted the 1st Nencki Institute PhD Student Conference “International PhD Program in Neurobiology”. The conference was chiefly directed towards PhD students at the Nencki Institute, who presented the results of their research projects during the oral and poster sessions. With over 50 oral presentations (including parallel sessions) and a poster session, the conference aimed at facilitating interactions between researchers and provoking stimulating discussion.

The Foundation for Polish Science has selected the beneficiaries of the second INTER competition. The aim of competition is to develop science popularisation skills in young researchers. In the finals each of the researchers have had five minutes to present his or her interdisciplinary project. The competition winners will receive prizes in the amount of 100,000 zlotys, including 20,000 zlotys as an individual stipend and 80,000 zlotys to carry out the winning research project.

The 17th edition of the Science Festival took place in Warsaw between 20-29 September, 2013. For this year’s edition Nencki researchers prepared an interesting and rich program. Under the YOUTH CLUB series high school students could attend lectures on biology, which greatly helped those students who are taking advanced biology on their high school exam.

On August 1st, 2013, Marcin Ciuk MSc was taken on to be the Head of the Neurobiology Centre (CN) of The Nencki Institute of the Polish Academy of Science. The 2010 Brain Awareness Week took place in Warsaw between March 13 and 19, 2010 as part of a global educational campaign called the International Brain Awareness Week. This international event has been organised for the 15th time on the initiative of the International Alliance for Brain Initiatives DANA. Each year, in the third week of March, a multitude of events are held in different countries to popularise knowledge about the brain, its function in health and disability. They introduce the newest scientific achievements in the field of brain research and raise social awareness of the significance of conducting scientific research on the nervous system. For the past 13 years the Brain Awareness Week has been organised in Warsaw annually by the Polish branch of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain (EDAB), the Polish Neuroscience Society and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences with support from the Committee on Neurobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the editorial office of Polityka, a Polish weekly magazine. As always, this year’s lectures were delivered by invited speakers, distinguished specialists in neurophysiology and psychiatry.

On 5th of December 2009 VIII Scientific Meeting For Teacher was organized by the the Nencki Institute and the Science Festival School. In this event took part more than 60 persons from all over Poland. Meeting was covered by the Honorary Patronage of the Mazovian Chief Education Officer.

Prof. Kris Turlejski, a neurobiologist from the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology who until now chaired the First Local Ethics Committee in Warsaw has been nominated by the Minister of Science for the member of the State Ethics Committee and then elected its Chair.

On November 2, 2009 Prof. Adam Szewczyk signed, on behalf of the Nencki Institute, a bilateral Cooperation Agreement concerning execution of the CePT Project: Centre of Preclinical Research and Technology with the Medical University of Warsaw. The Nencki Institute along with the Medical University of Warsaw – the CePT consortium coordinator and the University of Warsaw is one of the main beneficiaries of the CePT project. The value of the Centre for Neurobiology (CN) investment has been estimated at 52 million PLN, which constitutes approx. 15% of the total value of the CePT project (359 million PLN).

Dr Ksenia Meyza, from the group of prof. Jolanta Zagrodzka, was the winner (one of three) of The PNS Young Investigator Awards, during The 9th International Congress of the Polish Neuroscience Society, Warsaw 2009, for the lecture entitled: „Electrophysiological correlates of diverse emotional reactivity of Roman High – (RHA/Verh) and Roman Low Avoidance (RLA/Verh) rats”.

The Polish Biochemical Society has granted Prof. Lech Wojtczak and Dr. Krzysztof Zabłocki with Bolesław Skarżyński Award for the best article published in a quarterly journal “Postępy Biochemii” in year 2008. The article is entiled: “Mitochondria in cell life, death and disease”.

Due to the building repairs at the Nencki Institute only 4 lectures were held at the International Centre of Biocybernetics. All of them were very highly appreciated by the audience members. In 2009 we will return to the previous participation formula.

The Scientific Council of the Nencki Institute during its session on May 16th 2008 expressed its opinion on the government project of the reform of science and higher education in Poland. The Council decided to support the pro-reformatory resolution of the Scientific Council of The Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics in Warsaw and the petition of the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology to actively participate in the discussion on the proposed reform.
